This week, I came across an amazing YouTuber who focuses on creating content for kids with ADHD. In one of her videos, she interviewed an art therapist who shared some valuable tips. This inspired me to create activities with my kids as we journey through this experience.
Where the Talk about Superpowers is in the video
Minutes 20:37 – 21:55
The therapist talked about the importance of helping kids recognize their strengths, or “superpowers” as she called them. I’ve noticed that often there is more focus on the challenges rather than the strengths of individuals with neurodiverse brains. In superhero stories, characters usually need to learn how to use their powers effectively. For instance, Elsa from the movie Frozen initially kept her powers hidden instead of using them for good. I appreciated the video’s message about teaching kids to recognize and leverage their strengths for their benefit in the future.
With that in mind, one idea I had was to use chalk outside. We traced each other and then drew in our superpowers. Each of us had a chance to share what we thought our superpowers were, and it turned into a memorable teaching moment. It was also interesting for my partner and me to see what our kids considered our superpowers to be.
