I believe that setting goals is important for progressing in life. For years, my husband and I have kicked off the year by setting 5 goals to achieve together and 5 personal goals. One of our joint goals this year was to become more in tune with the earth, such as by growing our own food and eventually purchasing all our food from local sources.
That being said, at the beginning of the summer, we purchased a greenhouse and initially seeded 142 seeds, hoping to yield 142 plants. However, we’ve realized that gardening is not as straightforward as simply planting, watering, and waiting. At present, we only have a third of the original number of plants. This summer has been a valuable learning experience for us, and we now feel better equipped for future growing seasons.
This summer has brought us more than just delicious meals and new things to learn. It has allowed our family to bond once again and has also brought a sense of order and calm. The greenhouse has provided us with a peaceful space to relax on challenging days, and an opportunity to play in the dirt as if we were kids again.
While gardening, I looked into the connection between gardening and ADHD, and it really resonated with me. Gardening has a calming effect, whether it’s from getting your hands dirty or just being surrounded by greenery. It provides structure and routine, which is important for someone with a neurodivergent brain. Most importantly, its hands-on approach provides an energizing stimulus that not only nourishes the brain but also soothes the soul.
Join me for a summer of gardening or let me know about your gardens’ progress.
