Upon researching art therapy, I discovered that art journaling has become a common practice. For the past month, my family and I have been setting aside half an hour once or twice a week to draw pictures in our art journals and discuss them afterward. I wanted to share my experience with you.
My daughter
She loves it! Whenever I suggest drawing in our art journals, she eagerly sets the table in the dining room and waits for everyone to join in with music and drawing supplies. These journals really cater to her needs—she uses them to draw about her day, express her desires, or even make a checklist for when we go shopping. I’ve also noticed that she often imitates what my husband and I are drawing.
My Son
well, let’s say that upon fighting villains and training to be a Marvel superhero, art isn’t his thing. However, he created a unique “hairy stickman” and abstract art while reenacting an epic battle on paper with pen and squiggles.
My Husband
I found his artwork expressive in that you must look into the piece to understand what is happening.
For Me
drawing in my journal has been a sporadic affair as my mind is often filled with numerous thoughts. It serves as a means for projecting positivity and serves as a reminder that maintaining a positive mindset can shape my world according to my desires.
Overall
This experience has been amazing. It has once again allowed me to bond with my family and unwind, stepping away from the media-saturated world and getting back to basics. Furthermore, it has now become a weekly tradition that I feel can carry through years to come.
